The Theoretical Maximum Density Meter is used to determine the maximum specific gravity (Gmm) of bituminous paving mixtures using the vacuum sealing method, commonly known as the Rice Test.
The principle of the test is based on removing all air voids from the asphalt mixture using a vacuum system. The sample is submerged in water within a vacuum chamber, and air is evacuated. Once all entrapped air is removed, the true volume of the sample is determined, allowing accurate calculation of theoretical maximum density.
This parameter is fundamental in asphalt mix design as it is used to calculate:
- Air voids (Va)
- Voids in mineral aggregate (VMA)
- Voids filled with bitumen (VFB)
