Loss On Heating / Thin Film Oven

This dual purpose oven is designed to determine the loss in weight of bitumen and flux oils (Loss on Heating test) and the effect of heat and air on asphaltic materials (Thin Film test). The unit is heavily insulated and has a double glass door for viewing the test chamber thermometer and samples. Temperature is controlled at 163o C ± 1o C by means of a variable temperature controller and thermostat. Two rotating platforms are supplied with each oven: One accepts 9 standard penetration cups for the loss on heating test, the other accepts two 140mm diameter test pans for the thin film test. The platforms are rotated at 5 to 6 rpm by an external motor.

ASPHALT CONTENT TESTER (IGNITION METHOD)

The Asphalt Content Tester is used to determine the binder content of asphalt mixtures using the ignition method. In this process, the asphalt sample is subjected to high temperatures inside a furnace, causing the bitumen to burn off, leaving only aggregates behind.

The difference in weight before and after ignition provides the binder content. This method eliminates the need for solvents, making it faster, safer, and environmentally friendly.

The equipment is widely used in modern laboratories for quality control, mix design verification, and compliance testing.

ROLLING THIN FILM OVEN (RTFO)

The Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) is used to simulate the short-term aging of bitumen that occurs during mixing, transportation, and laying of asphalt. This process involves oxidation and volatilization of lighter fractions in the binder.

The working principle involves placing bitumen samples in glass bottles that rotate inside a heated chamber while a continuous stream of hot air is blown over them. The rotation ensures that the bitumen forms a thin film inside the bottle, maximizing exposure to heat and air, thereby accelerating the aging process.

The RTFO test is a critical part of performance grading (PG) of bitumen and is widely used in Super pave specifications to evaluate the effect of short-term aging on binder properties such as viscosity, stiffness, and ductility.
